Analyze 2-Mile Area Around UT Arlington: What is the median Household Income (2010 estimates) and how many wells are within 2 miles of UT Arlington?
- Download 2010 estimates by block group from SimplyMap.
- This is a proprietary database, limited to 10 simultaneous users.
- Clean SimplyMap table
- Add to ArcMap
- Download 2000 block group shapefile from TIGER
- Add to ArcMap
- Join SimplyMap table to TIGER shapefile. (See a problem here?)
- Fix field type in shapefile
- Open shapefile attribute table
- Click 'Table Options' button on top left corner, and select 'Add Field'
- Give name (following rules)
- Type: Double
- OK
- Scroll to far right of table and you will see your new field
- Right click your new field and select 'Field Calculator'
- Double-click 'BKGPIDFP00' so it appears in the text area box below.
- OK
- Now Join
- Export to make join permanent
- Download statewide well shapefile from Texas Water Development Board
- Add to ArcMap
- Create UT Arlington point shapefile
- Click the 'Find' button (binoculars)
- In the 'Locations' tab, select the U.S. Streets Geocode Service
- Enter: 701 S. Nedderman Drive, Arlington, TX 76019
- Click 'Find'
- Right-click top result and select 'Add Point'
- Close 'Find' dialog box
- Right-click 'Layers' and select 'Convert Graphics to Features'
- Specify a suitable location/name and OK
- Create a 1-mile buffer (radius) around UT Arlington
- ArcToolbox/Analysis Tools/Proximity/Buffer
- Tested exercise before class (not typical) and the spatial join against the well data took a long time due to the nigh number of wells in Texas. It will run faster if we clip the well data to Tarrant County first.
- At top of screen, Selection/Select by Location
- Select all features from [XYwelldata]
- Source Layer: BG Layer
- OK
